A common misconception I’ve encountered through discussions with friends and non-writers is the belief that AI can magically generate fully-formed articles independently. This perception undervalues the writer’s effort, suggesting that using AI is akin to cutting corners in the creative process.

Let’s debunk this: saying that using AI in writing is cheating is like arguing that using a computer for editing invalidates a writer’s craft. This notion is as unreasonable as claiming that the authenticity of a literary piece is compromised unless it is penned by hand and revised without digital tools. Clearly, technology serves as an aid, enhancing our capabilities and efficiency.

Consider this analogy: When books were first accessible, they too were technology. Did leveraging books to learn and improve make scholars less genuine? Certainly not. Similarly, AI is just a more advanced tool in our ever-evolving toolkit.

Furthermore, consider the evolution of cinema through the integration of CGI technology. We embraced CGI not because it replaced traditional filmmaking, but because it opened new realms of storytelling. For instance, eleven animated films that utilized CGI have each grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, demonstrating that new technology can coexist with traditional forms to create something even greater. Similarly, the integration of AI in writing isn’t a threat but an evolution—it expands our horizons rather than diminishing the value of human input.

Initially, there’s a raw, unshaped brainstorm—my first dump of thoughts and ideas. This block is then carefully divided into more manageable sections and paragraphs, resembling standardized blocks of marble. The real sculpting begins at the sentence level, where each sentence is crafted and refined, eventually coming together to form a cohesive and compelling narrative.

As a new writer, I’ve faced several challenges that are common in the craft:

• Overcomplexity: Initially, I found myself using overly complex language and technical jargon.

• Verbosity: I tended to be too wordy, adding unnecessary constructions to my texts.

• Overuse of Modifiers: I frequently used too many adjectives and adverbs.

• Lack of Focus: I often expanded the scope of my writing, making it unfocused and less cohesive.

It has helped me learn to write more naturally, allowing me to convey my human feelings and experiences in a way that resonates more authentically with my audience. This has significantly improved my workflow efficiency.

Now, the ability to complete what I start is something I am incredibly grateful for and something that is greatly underestimated. In the world of product development, particularly within startups, there is a well-established lean methodology known as Build-Measure-Learn. This iterative approach encourages continuous improvement and is highly adaptive to change—qualities that can greatly benefit the writing process. By embracing this mindset, writers can use AI technology as a means to deeply understand and refine their craft.

Adopting Lean Principles in Writing

Applying a lean methodology to writing starts with creating, or building, a draft—your initial ‘product.’ This is followed by measuring its effectiveness, which can involve using AI to assess readability, coherence, and emotional impact. The feedback you learn during this phase is crucial as it highlights areas needing further refinement. This iterative process allows you to edit and explore ideas more thoroughly, building upon each revision.

For example, you can ask an AI language model how well it understands the content you’ve written. If the AI struggles to grasp the message, it often indicates that the ideas are not clearly communicated, signaling a need for further clarification. This feedback loop enables you to deconstruct your writing and rebuild it more effectively.

AI also allows you to explore new directions you might not have previously considered. If an intriguing idea comes to mind, you can use AI to explore related concepts and find additional resources or authorities to read and learn from. You can also ask the AI to identify weaknesses in your arguments or logic and suggest other concepts to consider and help shape your view with wider reading. It’s important to remember that innovation often builds on existing knowledge—AI provides a more accessible way to access and harness this knowledge to make advancements today.

By iterating on specific sections based on AI feedback—refining a paragraph, rewording a sentence, or even rethinking an entire chapter—you can enhance the clarity and impact of your narrative. Each iteration brings you closer to a polished piece that clearly conveys your intended ideas with precision and creativity.
